about us

moveOn 89 Pilates | Yoga | Wellness About us

At moveOn 89 we fully subscribe to the words of Gray Cook who said, “first move well, then move often.” So whilst we have a passion for Pilates & Yoga in their purest form, we are most interested in the bigger picture of good movement which often starts with just simply moving, with play, with discovery. Our bodies were designed to move & to serve us within a balanced framework of strength & flexibility. But “lifestyle postures” lead to weakness & inflexibility, pain & often injury.

Our solution? Rediscover movement in its pure form & allow your body the freedom it once had as a child. Using the tools of Pilates, Yoga, Barre & HIIT we encourage you to play, bend, twist, jump, roll, laugh, be precise, be silly, be imperfect, laugh, stretch, unroll, soften & laugh some more.

All our teachers are armed with the basic tools of functional anatomy, physiology & nutrition & are fully trained in Pilates, Yoga and Personal Training, allowing them to teach Intelligent Movement. Our goal is to continue learning always in order to help you reach your goals. Come play!

    Dominic Pereira

Dominic’s passion has always been exercise with a particular love for trail running with her BFF – a rescue dog named Roger. She also enjoys HIIT training, primal movement, yoga, and of course, Pilates!

The various challenges of working with different body types and assisting her clients in achieving their specific goals are what make being a teacher so satisfying.

Dominic certified through the Exercise Teachers Academy (ETA) of South Africa and went on to qualify as a Body Control Pilates ® Instructor.

Over the years she has attended many of Physio, Jacqui Koep’s anatomy courses. She certified with Core Pilates in New York and later with Body Arts and Science (BASI). In August 2018 she attended Movement Culture and Ido Portal’s European Movement Meeting in Lisbon.

“Ongoing study and expanding my horizons is important, but the true beauty of the work is really about the people I have the privilege of teaching each day and who inspire me to continue learning and growing not only as a teacher but as a person.” – Dominic Pereira

    MICHAL GEORGE

Michal has been teaching various moment modalities for more than 25 years. He is a Body Arts and Sciences (BASI) certified Pilates instructor and a Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) certified personal trainer. With a background in psychology, he has studied Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at Stellenbosch University and believes in empowering his clients through self-awareness, while strengthening their bodies and minds.

Michal spends his time out of the studio cycling in remote places and running local trails.

    Pilates

You can choose to participate in a group class or book an individual session or get a friend to join you for a duet session. All sessions are 55 minutes.

    GROUP CLASSES

All our classes, except for one, are mixed ability classes which means that our skilled teachers can modify according to individual fitness and capability levels. We mix it up and keep things fun with the use of accessories like small and large balls, toning circles, therabands, foam rollers, small arcs and more.

    ADVANCED CLASS

The advanced Pilates routine is called Classical Pilates – 34 exercises originally designed by Joseph Pilates for dancers and athletes. We mix it up, however, adding our own unique flavour. The exercises are extremely challenging requiring the correct muscle recruitment. It is essential that you have mastered all the basic and intermediate exercises before progressing to this class. The advanced work is only suitable for the strong, uninjured body and is an excellent workout due to the dynamic pace of the class.

    INDIVIDUAL SESSION

This is one client with one instructor and incorporates the use of the Pilates equipment. We offer the Reformer and Exo chair as well as various accessories that will ensure that your session is varied each week. The equipment is a great tool for to help sports people who need to correct muscle imbalances due to the repetitive action of their sport, people recovering from surgery or anyone with specific movement or skeletal dysfunction.

    DUET SESSION

Bring a friend and share the session with an instructor. You get all the focused attention of the teacher for less cost and you have fun with a friend or family member. Can’t get anyone to join you? Chat to us about arranging another client to share your duet session.

    Yoga

At moveOn 89 we hope that Yoga serves as a way of giving our client tools to create their own inner quiet space; a space of connection and reflection. We want to offer a safe place to explore and be curious about what our bodies might be capable of doing if we dare to try; to work confidently with our strength and flexibility while playing and having fun.

    High Intensity Interval Training

These classes are high-intensity, 30min workouts focusing on cardio and strength. Body resistance exercises are used to push you beyond your perceived limits and give you a SUPER effective FAT-BURNING workout in a short space of time.

HIIT classes are challenging and no injured bods are allowed. Absolute beginners should ideally spend a month learning the basics of form in a Pilates class before trying HIIT. However, all the exercises are modified for varying fitness levels. So, if for example, you’re new to say, push-ups, you can do a modified push-up on your knees, instead of a full or even inverted one or the more challenging single version. In our very biased opinion, this is the best workout you will ever do!

I started off with just wanting to ‘try’ Pilates twice a week and ended up loving it so much, I have increased my weekly frequency. It is the only strength and core training that I do.

The classes are small and this allows the teachers an opportunity to correct both technique and posture. I have been encouraged to challenge myself but without compromising on form and technique. Classes have helped me build excellent strength and made me more mindful in training. My breathing technique has helped my running and provided me with a more resilient mindset to tackle the day to day stresses we all experience. The physical results are elongated muscles and a strong core and back.

The harmonious studio environment is an ideal setting for the practice of yoga and pilates. Being an absolute “newbie” to yoga, I was really nervous but the teacher provided an amazing safe environment, with wonderful themes and never compromising on technique and form. I can highly recommend anyone try out a Pilates or Yoga class at Moveon89. It is the kindest and most rewarding gift you can give yourself. Yes, I am a convert 🙂

I started Pilates with Dominic about 10 years ago as I wanted to strengthen my core and improve my posture whist avoiding a gym! Pilates is the only exercise that I’ve stuck with over the years as I find it both gentle on my body as well as challenging and strengthening. It’s also the only exercise where my focus is entirely on what I’m doing at that present moment.

I’m fortunate to live in the City and work in Southern Suburbs so can attend both studios. Somersault studios are lovely; they have the latest equipment, the rooms are clean and airy, as well as warm/cold depending on the season. They have everything I may need from hairbands to showers and the online booking system enables me to book or cancel a class straight from my phone. They also offer different packages and the more flexible option works for me as I often have work commitments.

I’ve continued with Pilates at Somersault studio for so many years as they have the most amazing instructors. They really focus on the individual – even in a group environment, they are encouraging and keep the classes both interesting and challenging. And after so many years I’m still learning and improving!I do both group mat classes and private equipment sessions where the latter is focused entirely on my body and what I need. Also working with the resistance on the machines has improved my quality of movement and technique.A friend of mine started Pilates at Somersault a year ago and recently told me that it’s changed her life. I feel the same, one of the best decisions I continue to make.

    Donna

I started Pilates and Yoga because I wanted to feel like I did when I was a kid in the playground again 🙂I’ve been doing classes for almost 2 years now.

moveOn 89 Studio was recommended by a friend. And I’m so glad it was because Dominic, Michael and Claire are just fantastic teachers and I love their classes because they are varied.

Why do I keep coming back week after week? Because of the great ‘family/friend’ atmosphere and because I enjoy it very much. And I want to say thanks to all the awesome people at moveOn 89 for making this possible.

    Elise

I had tried Pilates a couple of times in Paris. But I didn’t go in very convinced as I’m normally more about loud music, gym and sweating! But I quickly appreciated that I could get a workout while at the same time as getting to know my body better. With Pilates, you have to find out which muscle to use, how well your back is positioned, etc. It really helps one to disconnect from your problems of the day and focus 100% on what you are doing.

This is why when I arrived in Cape Town a year and a half ago, I wanted to continue with Pilates and found the Kloof Nek studio. So far I have hardly ever missed a class.I literally fell in love with Dominic’s classes. She is a very friendly and technical teacher. The other clients are nice people, and the groups are small. And there’s good spirit!

So far, I can see the results in many aspects: my muscles are more toned and I am more flexible. It feels like I am giving my back a good massage twice a week (when you work on a computer all day long it is very appreciated!). Also my classes are my “own moment” in the week, the one time when I stop running and looking at my clock and have one hour just for myself, to relax and workout! In one word, I have became totally ADDICTED!
